Ottawa’s Best Hotels

by Jake McGrail
Chateau Laurier Hotel

Whether you’re visiting the city temporarily or looking for a staycation, below are some of the best hotels and other places to stay in Ottawa.

Top Hotels and Other Places to Stay in Ottawa

This article is not a list of all the different hotels in Ottawa. It’s a collection of well-reviewed places of different kinds and price levels. Whatever it is you’re looking for with regards to accommodation, one of these locations should suit you well.

Places to Stay in the City Centre

The following places are all located in and around the downtown area. They present a wide range of options.

Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market

As the name suggests, this hotel is located in ByWard Market at 325 Dalhousie Street.  This is a luxury hotel with amenities including the tallest rooftop lounge in the city. The hotel is also pet-friendly and allows guests to bring their dogs as long as they give advance warning.

For more information visit the Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market webpage.

ARC THE.HOTEL

Another luxury establishment downtown, ARC THE.HOTEL describes itself as the first “lifestyle boutique hotel” in the city. Like the Andaz, this hotel allows dogs. The location at 140 Slater Street means the building is just two blocks from Confederation Park, which puts it in a great spot.

For more information check out the ARC THE.HOTEL website.

ByWard Blue Inn

This hotel is located a couple blocks away from the Andaz at 157 Clarence Street. It’s usually slightly cheaper than its ByWard Market neighbour, but it’s still high-quality. There is an outdoor patio to enjoy a snack and relax during the warmer months. As well, each room comes with its own private kitchenette.

To learn more visit the ByWard Blue Inn website.

Château Laurier

One of the most famous landmarks in Ottawa and a National Historic Site of Canada itself, the Château Laurier provides the opportunity to soak in some history while in comfort. Sitting at 1 Rideau Street directly across the canal from Parliament Hill, the enviable location only adds to the Château’s appeal.

For more information see our article about the Château Laurier Hotel.

Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel

A bit of a turn from the previous entries on this list, this hostel was originally a county jail and so provides the unique opportunity for guests to sleep in a former jail cell.  This building sits at 75 Nicholas Street near the edge of ByWard Market, making it an affordable place to stay while still being in a good area.

Click Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel for more information.

Le Germain

Le Germain is a very highly-rated hotel, although also one that’s definitely on the pricier side.  Another pet-friendly establishment, Le Germain includes a large breakfast that can be delivered to the room. There is also a mini-office area in each suite. The hotel is located at 30 Daly Avenue in ByWard Market.

For more information check out the Le Germain website.

Les Suites Hotel

Located at 130 Besserer Street just a block away from the Le Germain, Les Suites is a little bit cheaper than the former. The rooms come with a full kitchen setup as well as a workspace. On top of that there is an in-room spa service available for all guests.

Click Les Suites Hotel to learn more.

Rideau Inn

In the Centretown neighbourhood at 177 Frank Street, this building sits right near the Rideau Canal as well as popular Elgin Street. It’s a smaller hotel than most of the ones mentioned in this article, but it’s well-equipped and its location (only a short walk away from sites like the National Gallery and Museum of Nature) is a good one.

For more information visit the Rideau Inn website.

The Business Inn and Suites

This hotel is a 3-star (which means it’s affordable) while also being one of the higher-rated hotels in the area. Located at 180 MacLaren Street (right next to Elgin Street), it’s within walking distance of all the big attractions in the downtown area. There are a variety of room options including one designed for pets to come with their owners.

Click The Business Inn and Suites to learn more.

Places to Stay Outside of the City Centre

The following three places are all located outside of the main downtown/ByWard Market area. They’re all still good places to stay, though.

Auberge King Edward Bed and Breakfast

One of the top-rated bed and breakfasts in the city, it’s located at 525 King Edward Avenue which is only about a kilometre or so from ByWard Market. The building itself is over a century old and an Ottawa heritage property which makes it interesting to check out in its own right. With only a few exceptions, there is a minimum of two nights per booking.

To learn more check out the Auberge King Edward Bed and Breakfast website.

Courtyard Ottawa East

Located at 200 Coventry Road on the eastern side of the Rideau River, Courtyard Ottawa East is a bit further from the areas with the most attractions compared to the other hotels in this article. It’s manageable, though, especially if you have a vehicle with you. There is a full restaurant built into the hotel, and the building is next to Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park.

For more information visit the Courtyard Ottawa East website.

Residence Inn Ottawa Airport

Despite the fact that it has Ottawa Airport in its name, the Residence Inn is actually about a five- to 10-minute drive from Ottawa International Airport. The hotel does offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport, however. Located at 1172 Walkley Road (about eight kilometres from the city centre), this hotel is on the more expensive side but does have very thorough accommodations.

To learn more check out the Residence Inn Ottawa Airport website.
